After many years of having two middle-sized chess clubs in Maastricht, namely MSV (Maastrichtse Schaak Vereniging) and VSM (Verenigd Schaakgenootschap Maastricht), per Januari 1, 2003 both clubs have taken the important step to continue as a single club, under the (provisional) name MSV-VSM. As a result Maastricht has again a big and important chess club, with many activities. At this moment the club has around 90 members, organises both internal as external chess activities, and participates with several teams in the (regional) LiSB competition. MSV-VSM has as one of only a few clubs in the region a big jouth division.
On this webpage we will give you some more information on our history, goals, and activities. Unfortunately all other pages on this website are in Dutch only. However, if you have any questions, just contact one of the opeople mentioned below, and they will give you ample details.
We hope that after reading this page you come (with us) tot the conclusion that playing chess with MSV-VSM is both useful and agreeable!
The most important activity of MSV-VSM is the club evening on TUESDAYs, where all members and other interestees are wholeheartedly welcome. These club evenings are held during the whole year, except for national holidays. Only in very exceptional cases (water flooding in 1994!) the weekly club evening will be canceled.
The club evening offers an interesting variety of competitions. Most importantly we have the standard competition, in which long games (2 hrs per person max. for a game) are being played. The strongest player in this competition may call him- or herself club champion for a year. Within this competition there is also a KO-cup (knock-out) competition. Besides some evenings with RAPID-chess are organised: these games are being played with shorter times (20-30 minutes per person for a game). Finally, the club also organises a SPEED-CHESS championship (max. 5 or 7 minutes per person per game). During the summer holidays (July and August) MSV-VSM traditionally organises an OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP of Maastricht.

Besides our own competitions, MSV-VSM participates in the (external) Limburg competitions. The so-called bondscompetition, games with standard thinking time of 2-3 hrs per person (depending on the class), against other Limburg chess clubs, is being organised over 7 Sunday afternoons. In 2011-2012 MSV-VSM participates with four teams, one in the promotion class, two in the first class, and one in the third class of the regional Chess Association LiSB. Besides, the LiSB organises a regional Rapid competition and a regional KO-cup competition, in which MSV-VSM participates.

Information on club activities, results, chess problems, game analyses and other relevant facts is being published in our club magazin, De Kiebitz (unfortunately, only in Dutch), that appears once or a few times per year. Also of interest for non-members! Besides, all relevant information is published quickly at the web pages of MSV-VSM.
For potential junior members: if you have interest in participating in our youth division, please contact Jos Uiterwijk. For contact details, see above. Of course, you also just can drop by on a youth evening (Tuesdays, between 6:30 and 7:45 p.m.) . For the location, see below.
At our web site a small brochure will appear shortly, with the most important information. You will be able to read, download and/or print this brochure (in PDF format).
