Solution to problems with the SD-card-slot on Treo 650's ('Card not inserted')

Dear Ms. O'Leary (or other tech support personnel),

because your response took a bit longer then expected (1 wk. instead of 1 day) I have in the mean time done a bit more research into the matter and solved the problem and it is not a faulty device. Why mail back then you ask? Because I have found the cause of the problem and expect more people, especially upgrading from another palmone device, will have had the same problem and the answer is simple! I think this could be a useful addition to your support database and possibly the setup routine of all Treo 650's.

The problem: I have upgraded from a palmone m505 to a Treo 650. When setting up the Treo you can chose to keep all your old programs, files and settings from the older device. I chose to do so. After doing so, the below problem ('no card inserted' when a card was inserted) occurred. (Not that I knew that then because I immediately installed the device when it came from the box.) This was due to an old upgrade file for the SD slot in the m505. The file is called SlotDriver__SDIO-sdsd.PRC (see attachment) and was probably downloaded from http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/file_manager_update.html . Deleting this file and soft resetting the Treo solved all problems! (I figured this out by doing a hard reset on the Treo. I only did soft resets before. After this the SD slot worked perfectly so it had to be the software)

The solution for other users: When the Treo 650 SD-slot is not working ('no card inserted' when a card was inserted) after upgrading from an older device (see list of the file_manager_update:  Palm m125, m500, m505, m515, m130, and i705 handhelds) chose the main menu 'Delete...' option, look for a file called 'SlotDriver__SDIO-sdsd' and delete it. The soft reset your device.

Possible fix for all future users: When upgrading from an older device the Treo 650 setup puts files not compatible with Palm OS5 in a backup folder (e.g. C:\Palm\UsernameMy\PalmOS5 Incompatible Apps). When upgrading from certain devices (see list of the file_manager_update:  Palm m125, m500, m505, m515, m130, and i705 handhelds) the setup should always put the file 'SlotDriver__SDIO-sdsd' there too if it is present.

I hope this helps other people and would like to know what is done with this information, because it should be available on the web to everyone.

Kind regards,

Michael Capalbo

Dear Mr. Capalbo,

Thank you for contacting palmOne Technical Support.

Your case number is 1-107147428.

In response to your issue concerning the SD slot, it would seem that your handheld may be faulty. Customers should return defective products to the point of purchase, requesting a new replacement boxed product if the handheld was purchased under 30 days ago. Palm supports its distributors and resellers to allow them to provide replacements in accordance with local consumer legislation.

If you cannot return to the point of purchase Palm will be pleased to handle your repair through our standard repair process. Please note however that any replacement product supplied by Palm, if you choose this option, may be a factory refurbished unit, not a new product

If you have any further questions please contact us again.

Kind Regards,

Problem Description: SD Cards
Detailed Description: Recently bought Treo 650 from KPN in the Netherlands. Also bought Kingston 1 GB SD card. Whole installation went perfect. BUT when I insert the SD card the Treo does noet see it at all. In the card Info application it sais 'No Card Inserted'. It's not the card because it works fine in my old Palm m505! I also allready tried:
- inserting another SD card (which I know works on other devices)
- doing a HotSync both with and without the card inserted
- doing a soft reset by taking out the batteries (tried that both with and without the card inserted)

Please help. I hope you can help me but I fear the SD slot is broken.

Thanks for your trouble,

Michael
