April 25, 2006 I was hit by a stroke. I revalidated up to Christmas 2006. As of January 1st 2007 I am back in office on a fulltime basis! It will never be the same but you have to cope!
That explains why my website was not maintained this whole period between. From now on it will be updated regularly (last update January 2011).

Prof
Dr (Hans) J.G.A. van Mierlo (1953) came in September 1987 as an Associate
Professor of Public Economics to the Department of General Economics (Faculty
of Economics and Business Administration) at Universiteit Maastricht. As of May
1, 2000, he is appointed as Professor of
Public Finance in this Department and Faculty.
He
studied Political Science and Public Administration at the University of
Nijmegen, where he received his M.A (drs) in June 1976 (cum laude). He received
his Ph.D. in Economics at Erasmus
University in Rotterdam in October1989 (supervisor: Prof Dr Ir J.M.M. Ritzen).
Previous positions
include: research associate in public economics at Erasmus University, Rotterdam
and Social and Cultural Planning Office of the Netherlands, Rijswijk
(1976-1979); assistant professor of political science and political economy at
Erasmus University, Rotterdam (1979-1987); part-time associate professor of
political economy at Erasmus University, Rotterdam (1987-1988).
His
research interests are: public
management reform and public entrepreneurship; public-private management; policy
analysis and policy evaluation; fiscal economics; welfare economics and public
choice; various policy fields: health economics and policy; environmental
economics and policy, education economics and policy, housing economies and
policy, infrastructure economics
and policy.
Professor
Van Mierlo has been Acting Chairman of the
Public Economics Section within
the Department of General Economics, from March 1st, 1998 until
September 1st, 2002. In this position, he bore full responsibility
for all the teaching activities of the working group on Public Economics.
As of March 1st, 1998, he is Director of Studies of the Faculty Bachelor and Master Programme in Fiscal Economics. In this position, he bears full responsibility for all the teaching activities in the undergraduate and graduate faculty programme in Fiscal Economics and as such is a member of the Board of Examiners of the Faculty.
As of September 1st, 2006 up to March 1st, 2007, Dr. Maarten Vendrik was acting director. As of March 1st, 2007, Professor Van Mierlo is acting director again.
Furthermore, up to August 2007, Professor Van Mierlo was Coordinator of the Module on Comparative Policy Evaluation in the European Union of the MA-programme in European Public Affairs (current programme director: Dr S Vanhoonacker), which started in August 1999 at the Universiteit Maastricht in close cooperation with the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) in Maastricht. Similar courses he teaches now in MA-programmes in the Faculties of Economics and Bussiness Administration, Cultural Sciences and Law.
In addition, Professor Van Mierlo is an Expert in European policy consultation and evaluation.
In the summer of 1998 he has been senior consultant on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was head of the Evaluation Mission set up for the Matra-programme on Good Governance in the Russian Federation. This Mission visited Russia in June 1998. Professor Van Mierlo has written two evaluation reports for this Mission (see list of publications).
In April-June 2005 he was senior consultant on behalf of the World Bank. He wrote a Diagnostic Policy Paper on Wage System Reform in Educatin and Health Care in Tajikistan. For that purpose he paid two two-week site-visits to Tajikistan in April and May 2005.
Uit hoofde van mijn functie als Hoogleraar Openbare Financën ben ik redactielid van het Nederlandse Tijdschrift voor Openbare Financiën (voortzetting van tijdschrift voor Openbare Uitgaven, sinds 1970!), dat uitgegeven wordt door SDU onder verantwoordelijkheid van de Wim Drees-Stichting voor Openbare Financiën, waarvan ik tevens bestuurslid ben. Dagblad De Limburger (DDL) had in zijn zaterdag-editie de rubriek Onder Economen, waarin verschillende economen van de Faculteit der Economische Wetenschappen en Bedrijfskunde van de Universiteit Maastricht schrijven. Van september 2000 tot maart 2004 leverde Hans van Mierlo daaraan ook een ongeveer maandelijkse bijdrage. Hij gebruikte daarin de gereedschapskist van de welvaartstheorie en de organisatie-economie om organisatie-, bestuurs- en beleidsproblemen van overheid en publieke sector te analyseren. Hij liet zien dat de economische wetenschap een leuk maar ook praktisch en leerzaam vak kan zijn!
