Biography

Geranda Notten is a PhD student and teaching assistant for the Department of Economics of Maastricht University (The Netherlands). Her research interests are in the field of poverty and inequality (dynamics), consumption smoothing and social protection. As part of her PhD research, she investigated the relation between poverty risk and consumption smoothing abilities in Russia. Currently, Geranda is mapping the range of consumption smoothing strategies followed by Russian households as well as their institutional counterparts (financial, labor and goods markets, public authorities, social networks and within household strategies such as home production). In a joint project with Franziska Gassmann she evaluated the targeting efficiency of the reformed federal child benefit program in Russia and analyzed the adequacy of child benefits in the prevention of (chronic) poverty. Currently, she is also working with Chris de Neubourg on a comparative poverty study between EU and the US in which she compare the official poverty measurement methods of the EU and US and applies them to both regions. Geranda has been a visiting fellow at CEPS/INSTEAD in Luxembourg, the Wiener Center for Social Policy at Harvard University as well as National Poverty Center of the University of Michigan. She participated in consultancy teams working on social protection assignments financed by the World Bank. Since 2001, she has been a tutor in the problem based learning system of Maastricht University teaching bachelor level courses such as micro, macro and international economics as well as a master level course on social protection. She will defend her PhD mid 2007.
