"A fascinating read"- Meuse-Rhine Journal

"Reminiscent of Germinal" - HP/De Tijd

"An intriguing portrait of Maastricht anno 1867, a sparkling city where people from all directions flock together" - Radio Netherlands

Below you see the scene where my 19th century story unfolds: the cristal, glass and pottery factories of the Regout family in Maastricht (the Netherlands) and the transshipment port "Het Bassin")

I divide "my" working hours between academic research and teaching, and fiction/faction writing (novels, columns)

Academic work: I am an associate professor at the Department of Organization and Strategy, Maastricht University (P.O. Box 616, 6200 MD Maastricht, The Netherlands). After my study, I worked for several years at the sociological department of the University of Amsterdam, especially in the field of the sociology of culture. Furthermore, I worked as a personal secretary of the English-German sociologist, Norbert Elias.

My dissertation involved a study of cultural and institutional aspects of organizational design and labour discipline in the early factory system, based on the case of the Maastricht glass-, crystal- and pottery factories of the Regout family (`Vader, Raadgever en Beschermer'. Petrus Regout en zijn arbeiders 1834-1870, Maastricht University Press, 1992). My promotor was Geert Hofstede.

My academic work has focussed on the neo-institutionalist concept of national business systems, developed by a group of European researchers (Richard Whitley et al.). Here below you can see some of the volumes published by this group - and to which I have contributed pieces on the Dutch and Belgian business system.

Currently, I have shifted my attention somewhat to micro-sociological processes in organizations. This has resulted, amongst others, in: Iterson, Ad van, Willem Mastenbroek, Tim Newton, and Dennis Smith (2002), The Civilized Organization. Norbert Elias and the future of organization studies, Amsterdam/Philadelphia: Benjamins Publishers. At the macro level, governance issues keep on having my attention.

Fiction work: I have published three collections of short stories (Het geheim van de dichter; Een hoofd vol fruit; Zuiderlingen) and three novels (Een verborgen man; Francesca's moeder; De citoyenne). I also wrote a stage play (for theatre company Het Vervolg): a monologue directed by Floor Huygen and performed by Mieneke Bakker (3rd picture from the left, below). Next to that, I write, since 2000, a weekly column for the Dutch regional newspaper Dagblad De Limburger, under the pen name of Impassant.
